Biscuits' Evan Longoria named TOPPS Southern League Player of the Month

MONTGOMERY – Montgomery Biscuits third baseman Evan Longoria has been named the TOPPS Southern League Player of the Month for May, the Southern League announced Tuesday. The award is voted upon by the field managers of the Southern League.

The third overall draft pick of Tampa Bay in 2006, Longoria batted .317 in May with six doubles, seven home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games. In addition, the native of Downey, CA, set a team record by reaching base via walk, hit or hit-by-pitch in 37 consecutive games. The streak was finally snapped on May 21.

The 21-year-old's finest May moments occurred from May 12-14 in the first three games of a series at the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. Longoria homered in each game, batting 7-for-13 with 10 runs batted in.

After he was drafted out of Long Beach State University, Longoria experienced a busy 2006, playing at three different levels along the Tampa Bay organizational ladder. In 62 total games between Class Short-A Hudson Valley, Class A-Advanced Visalia and Class AA Montgomery, the third baseman compiled a .315 batting average with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs. Following the season, he was named the #2 overall prospect in the Devil Rays system and the organization's best power hitter by Baseball America.

Longoria is the third Biscuit to be honored as a Topps Southern League Player of the Month. In 2005, outfielder Delmon Young was named the Player of the Month for both April and May. In 2006, starter Andy Sonnanstine was named the Player of the Month for July.

Young and Sonnanstine are currently teammates at the Major League level with the Devil Rays, with Sonnanstine scheduled to make his big-league debut this evening at Toronto.
