MONTGOMERY
-- A late surge of runs by the Huntsville
Stars at Riverwalk Stadium Wednesday night
helped the North Division champs to an 8-4
win over the Montgomery Biscuits in Game One
of the Southern League Chapionship Series.
The
Biscuits had opened up an early lead in the
first inning, with a three-run clout by first
baseman Chris Nowak. But Stars starter Sam
Narron allowed little more -- just a solo
bomb by Gaby Martinez in the fourth -- as
the Biscuits went down quietly the rest of
the way.
Montgomery
starter Wade Davis worked out of several jams,
even escpaing a runners-on-the-corners, no-out
jam in the first inning, but the Stars eventually
got to him. Mickey Brantley scored Lou Palmisano
with a third-inning sacrificle fly and new
Star Mat Gamel singled in Steve Sollman in
the fourth. Davis (4.1 IP, 7 H, R, 3 ER) departed
in the fifth inning with one out, a man in
and the tying run on base. Reliever Richard
De Los Santos allowed that run to score on
sacrifice fly by Gamel that nearly left the
ballpark for a grand slam.
The
Stars' bopper Brendan Katin, Southern League
leader in home runs and RBIs, gave his team
the lead in the seventh with a solo home run.
The blast hung the loss on De Los Santos.
Huntsville
racked up three insurance runs against Montgomery's
bullpen in the eighth, with bases-loaded runs
scoring on a a walk, a hit batsman and a sacrifce
fly.
The
Biscuits trail the series, 1-0, and try to
even it up behind lefty Jake McGee on Thursday
evening at 7:05. He'll be opposed by righty
Corey Thurman, who's coming off of a combined
no-hitter in the Divisional playoffs against
Tennessee.
