MONTGOMERY – Mat Gamel knocked in five runs Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium as the Huntsville Stars crushed the Montgomery Biscuits, 11-3.
The win captured the series for the Huntsville Stars and placed them back in a tie for the lead in the North Division.
Gamel's first two RBIs came in the first inning, as he singled home Michael Brantley and Guilder Rodriguez as part of a four-run first inning against Biscuits starter Mike Wlodarczyk. He later pounded the final nail in the coffin of Wlodarczyk in the fourth with a base-clearing double.
The Biscuitsshowed life in the first inning, retaliating from the early surge by the Stars with three runs of their own, on a Ronnie Merrill triple and a John Jaso single.
Huntsville starter Sam Narron needed 30 pitches to get his first out and 41 to complete the first inning, but he shimmied away from the ropes, retiring 13 in a row and ending up with a quality start. He lasted six inning, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out five.
Wade Townsend entered for the Biscuits in the fourth, with the Stars already ahead, 8-3. He pitched four innings, doubling his longest outing of the season. The Stars got to him only in the sixth, when Cole Gillespie's two-out double scored two. Huntsville wrapped up the scoring in the ninth with one more again Brock Till on the second RBI double of the game for Michael Bell.
The Biscuits, 11-19, remain five games out of first place in the mediocre South Division.
Montgomery welcomes Birmingham to town Monday night to begin a five-game set. Gametime is 7:05.
