MONTGOMERY – Matt LaPorta and the Huntsville Stars defeated the Montgomery Biscuits 4-2 Thursday at Riverwalk Stadium.
LaPorta, the league leader in home runs and RBIs, homered twice and doubled against Biscuits starter Wade Davis, providing all of the RBIs for the Stars in their eighth straight victory.
LaPaorta hit a solo homer in the fourth inning on a 3-and-0 count to break a scoreless tie. With the game knotted up again at 1-1, he blasted a 3-run homer in the sixth inning, again on a 3-and-0 count.
Davis lasted through the end of the sixth, allowing no walks and striking out a season-high eight. He allowed six hits, three of them to LaPorta. Huntsville starter Derek Miller also lasted six, only allowing a Matt Spring double to score Pat Cottrell in the fifth inning. The BIscuits loaded the bases in that inning with one out but failed to score again.
Montgomery loaded them again in the seventh against reliever Joe Bateman but only pushed across one on a bases-loaded walk by John Jaso. Chris Nowak grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Biscuits set an all-time record by losing their eighth straight home game, dating back to April 7.
The middle game of the series isFriday at 7:05 p.m. with Montgomery left James Houser on the mound.
