Jaxx sweep Biscuits with 7-2 win
JACKSON, Tenn. - The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx put the finishing touches on a three-game sweep of the Montgomery Biscuits at Pringles Park Wednesday afternoon, topping Montgomery, 7-2.
It was the fourth series this season that resulted in a sweep; two have gone the Biscuits' way and two have been swept by opponents. It was also the Biscuits' fourth straight loss, a season high.
The Biscuits were scoreless until the eighth inning, when two infield errors kept the inning alive for Fernando Cortez, who slashed a two-run double off the right field fence. Montgomery avoided the shutout and has yet to be held scoreless this season.
West Tenn scored in the first inning on a two-out double by Casey McGehee and in the third on a solo home run by leadoff hitter Felix Pie (his third).
Biscuits starter Brian Lockwood (0-3) ran out of gas in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out before leaving. Reliever Chris Flinn allowed all three inherited runs to score, plus one of his own, making it 6-0 at the time. Flinn allowed one more in the seventh but escaped a jam which saw runners at second and third with no outs.
Carlos Hines pitched a perfect eighth inning for Montgomery.
Cortez had three hits in the game; second baseman Johnny Raburn returned to the lineup and knocked out two hits.
Montgomery returns home to begin a seven-game homestand on Thursday evening. They open up a four-game series against the red hot Carolina Mudcats at 7:05 p.m. with lefty Chris Seddon on the mound.
