Biscuits back in win column with 5-4 victory
Series-opening win against Birmingham snaps 5-game skid
|
BIRMINGHAM – A four-run sixth inning by the Montgomery Biscuits at Regions Park Thursday night overturned a 2-0 Birmingham Barons lead, ended a good start by Birmingham starter Clayton Richard and helped snap the Biscuits' five-game losing streak.
The inning's biggest hit, and the eventual game-winner, was a two-out, two-run, bases-loaded single by Sergio Pedroza. Another run scored on a bases-loaded walk by Chris Nowak. The Biscuits singled four times in the inning against Richard, who had allowed just one hit and no runs in the first five innings.
The inning supported Montgomery starter Jake McGee, who was just as good. a first-pitch solo homer by Stefan Gartrell in the third inning was all that separated him from retiring the first 13 hitters in succession. Gartrell struck again in the fifth, doubling in Micah Schurstein to make it 2-0 Birmingham. McGee, the eventual winner, went to 2-1.
Immediately following the Biscuits' big sixth, the Barons made it a one-run game when a David Cook sacrifice fly scored Miguel Negron. But Montgomery had a sacrifice fly of its own in the seventh, with John Jaso knocking home Erold Andrus.
The Biscuits' bullpen held onto the lead, barely. Eddie Morlan tossed 1 2/3 innings before exiting the game when he re-aggravated the shoulder injury that kept him out of the last roadtrip. Jino Gonzalez escaped the eighth and allowed a run in the ninth but left the game-tying run on first base while earning his second save.
The Biscuits and Barons meet again Friday night at 7:05, with Montgomery righty Wade Davis (2-1) against Birmingham's Kyle McCulloch (1-2).
