Smokies edge Biscuits, 3-2
Davis and Samardzija duel to five-inning stalemate
|
Kodak, Tenn. – Star prospect pitchers Wade Davis and Jeff Samardzija pitched to a five-inning stalemate at Smokies Park Tuesday night, but the Tennessee Smokies scraped together one more run and defeated the Montgomery Biscuits, 3-2.
Samardzija, Brady Quinn's favorite receiver target at Notre Dame, caught some trouble in the first inning, as he walked one and allowed two singles. The second hit, by third baseman Chris Nowak, scored the game's first run. The Smokies' offense briefly afforded Samardzija the lead, but he also allowed a leadoff home run to Pat Cottrell in the fifth to tie it up.
The Smokies had scored single tallies in back-to-back innings in the third and fourth, producing a run on a Corey Coles single in the third and a Nowak error in the fourth. The latter run was unearned to Davis, who walked one and fanned three in his five innings.
The game's last run was also unearned, as Steve Andrade permitted a Chris Robinson single to plate Doug Deeds in the sixth inning. The run was unearned because of a prior passed ball by John Jaso. The reliever threw a perfect seventh inning but suffered a loss in his Biscuits debut.
The Biscuits consistently threatened Tennessee's bullpen but never crossed home plate. They knocked out six hits in four innings against the bullpen but stranded all six runners. The game ended with runners at first and third.
The Biscuits and Smokies take the series to the middle game Wednesday morning, with a 10:30 a.m. start. Montgomery lefty James Houser meets Tennessee lefthander Donnie Veal.
