Biscuits smoke Smokies, 10-3
Montgomery collects 15 hits, snapping losing streak

Kodak, Tenn. – The Montgomery Biscuits (4-7) were hot on a cold night at Smokies Park Monday night, smacking out 15 hits in a 10-3 win over the Tennessee Smokies (7-4).

With temperatures between the mid-40s and mid-30s and gusty wind, the Biscuits stopped a three-game losing streak and a four-game winning streak by the Smokies.

The offensive support gave Jake McGee his first win of the year. The lefty allowed only one hit in five innings, the first of which was not until there were two outs in the fifth. McGee did walk three however, and he allowed two runs. By the time McGee departed, however, he had a big lead.

Of Montgomery's 15 hits, 13 were singles. They scored four runs in the third inning, slapping out six singles. Rashad Eldridge, Johnny Raburn and Chris Nowak each singled home a run, and John Jaso plated a run with a groundout.

Depite the blows he took in the third, Tennessee starter Justin Berg lasted until the sixth inning, but the Biscuits quickly ran him off when Gaby Martinez, Ronnie Merrill, Pat Cottrell and Eldridge all rapped out consecutive singles. Berg left with the bases full and one run already home. Erold Andrus doubled home two more runs to give the Biscuits a 7-2 lead.

Montogmery got three more against reliever Matt Avery in the eighth inning, as Cottrell doubled home a run and two more scored on sacrifice flies.

With Tennessee's bullpen stretched thin, Smokies manager Buddy Bailey decided to bring in shortstop Joe Simokaitis to pitch in the eighth, and the infielder proved to be Tennessee's most effective pitcher. He faced four Montogmery hitters and retired them all, striking out Cottrell to finish the ninth.

For the Biscuits, the bullpen pitched four innings without an earned run. Roger Deago allowed an unearned run in two innings after an seventh-inning error by Merrill. Jino Gonzalez pitched two perfect innings to finish the game, striking out two.

The Biscuits and Smokies meet again Tuesday, with a spectacular pitching matchup. Biscuits righty Wade Davis meets Tennessee righthander Jeff Samardzija at 6:15 Central time.
