Mudcats come back for 4-2 win
Carolina scores four in sixth
|
Zebulon, N. Car. – James Houser gave the Biscuits five innings of scoreless, one-hit ball, allowing the Montgomery Biscuits to build a slim lead over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium Friday night. But the Mudcats struck as soon as the Biscuits' bullpen took over, posting four runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 4-2 victory.
Houser (0-0) only allowed one runner as far as second base in his start, outdeuling Carolina lefty Aaron Thompson, who allowed only two hits but walked five. Thompson permitted a run in the fifth inning, after loading the bases on an infield single by Johnny Raburn and walks by Erold Andrus and Chris Nowak. With the bases jammed, Thompson balked for the second time in the game, moving everyone up.
Mudcats catcher Alberto Concepcion had the big hit in the decisive inning, a one-out, bases-clearing double against Jeremy Flanagan. Flanagan had come in to clean up Jon Barratt's mess; Barratt had walked two, thrown a game-tying wild pitch, and allowed a Texas League single and infield single. He suffered the loss, allowing four runs in one third of an inning.
The Biscuitsgot one run back in the eighth with a two-out RBI single by Rashad Eldridge that plated Pat Cottrell, but Montgomery consistently failed to deliver in the clutch. The Biscuits stranded 13 runners on base, including at least one in every inning.
Jino Gonzalez pitched scoreless ball in the seventh and eighth innings.
Game four of the series is at 4:15 p.m. Central Time on Saturday, with Montgomery righty Richard De Los Santos (1-0) against Carolina righthander Rick Vanden Hurk.
