Biscuits Take Thriller in 15
Wrigley delivers in franchise-long ballgame
MOBILE, AL – Henry Wrigley’s second go-ahead RBI in extras stood against the Mobile BayBears (56-46), and the Biscuits (56-47) won the longest game in franchise history in 15 innings by a final of 5-4 Saturday at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Wrigley knocked a single through the left side of the infield to score Emeel Salem, who had started the 15th with an infield single. Wrigley had scored Drew Anderson with a sacrifice fly in the 13th to go up 4-3, but Mobile’s Ollie Linton singled with two outs in the bottom of the frame to score Jake Elmore and extend the game.
With the score knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th, Linton hit a ball off the top of the wall in right field. It caromed towards the infield, and Linton rounded third and tried for a game-ending inside-the-park homer. He was ruled to have been tagged out by Matt Spring, and after a lengthy argument from manager Rico Brogna, the game continued into the 12th.
The BayBears scored single runs in the third, fourth, and seventh to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the eighth, the Biscuits would tie things at 3-3 using only one hit. Drew Anderson drew a bases-loaded walk, Leslie Anderson was hit by a pitch with them still loaded, and Wrigley lofted a sacrifice fly to center.
The BayBears stranded 16 runners in the game, and had a runner in scoring position each of the last six innings.
Sergio Espinosa (2-2) threw 2.2 scoreless relief frames to grab the win. Mobile reliever Bryan Woodall (0-2) suffered the loss. Both starters took no-decisions, with Alex Cobb allowing two runs over six innings and Tom Layne throwing five shutout innings.
Emeel Salem led the Biscuits by going 3-7, while Wrigley and John Matulia each had two hits apiece.
LHP David Newmann will throw for the Biscuits in the series finale Sunday at 6:05 against Pat McAnaney.
