Biscuits Overcome Early Hole for 5th Straight
After Smokies score four in the first, Biscuits get seven unanswered in 7-6 win
KODAK, TN – The Biscuits (53-39) responded to four first inning Smokies (54-39) runs with seven unanswered, then held off a ninth inning rally to beat Tennessee 7-6 on Sunday at Smokies Park. The Biscuits are now a perfect 5-0 on the current roadtrip, and 8-1 away from Riverwalk in July.
A Robinson Chrinos homer keyed the first inning explosion for the Smokies against Alex Torres (9-3), but the Biscuits used the long-ball to crawl their way back in. Cody Cipriano hit a solo-shot in the second to make it 4-1, and a John Matulia homer in the fifth cut the deficit to one at 4-3.
An RBI single for Henry Wrigley scored Rashad Eldridge in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.
After Craig Albernaz started the seventh with a double, second baseman Tony Thomas committed a throwing error on an Emeel Salem bounce out to give the Biscuits their first lead. Eldridge would follow with a two-out double to add insurance, and an Albernaz double one inning later made it 7-4.
Ryan Reid (1) gave up a single and triple to start the bottom of the ninth, with an RBI-groundout cutting it to 7-6. Brett Jackson singled to put the tying run aboard, but Reid got Josh Vitters to chop to second to end the game.
Torres responded to the four-run first with the deepest outing of his career, going 7.2 and tossing seven strikeouts. Tennessee starter Jeremy Papelbon took a no-decision, allowing three runs on three hits over five innings, and Oswaldo Martinez (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
Cipriano led the Biscuits, going 3-4. Albernaz chipped in a pair of hits.
RHP Alex Cobb will look to keep the Biscuits perfect on the roadtrip against RHP Chris Archer on Monday at 6:15 CT.
