Newmann Spectacular in Shutout
Biscuits win 4-0 behind 7.2 from David Newmann

MONTGOMERY, AL – For the second day in a row, starting pitching was the story for the Biscuits. Today, it was David Newmann making the deepest outing of the season for the Biscuits, tossing 7.2 scoreless en route to a 4-0 Biscuits win. The shutout is the fourth of the season aleady for Montgomery.

The Biscuits broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Greg Sexton doubled home Chris Nowak and Matt Fields.  They added one in the seventh on an RBI triple from John Matulia and one in the eighth when Cody Cipriano singled home Fields, who had walked with one out.

The Biscuits had several chances to blow the game wide open, but left the bases loaded twice and stranded 15 on the afternoon.

Emeel Salem recorded his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-4 with a walk. Nowak, Cipriano, and Matulia all had two hits for the Biscuits. Alex Romero and Luis Bolivar led the Braves with two knocks apiece.

Newmann (1-0) struck out a season-best seven while walking just one, allowing four hits. Mississippi starter Scott Diamond (0-2) went 4.1, allowing two runs on nine hits in the loss. Matt Gorgen picked up his fourth save, pitching the final 1.1 in relief.

The Biscuits (10-9) clinch the series victory with their second win a row, while the Braves (10-9) fall into a 2nd place tie with the Biscuits.

RHP Jeremy Hall throws in the series capper for the Biscuits on Wednesday night against Mississippi’s RHP Eric Cordier with the first pitch in the air at 7:05.
