Two is Enough for Biscuits in Downs' Gem
Darin Downs throws 5.2 of two-hit, shutout baseball

MONTGOMERY, AL – Darin Downs tossed 5.2 innings of two-hit, scoreless baseball, and the Biscuits held off a ninth-inning threat to top the Mississippi Braves by a final of 2-1.

Emeel Salem led off the first inning for the Biscuits with a double to right field. After advancing to third on a Chris De La Cruz grounder, he came home to score when Matt Fields hustled to first to avoid an inning-ending double play.

The other Biscuits run came in the fourth inning. Greg Sexton and Cody Cipriano knocked back-to-back singles with one out, and after a strikeout from Cody Strait, John Matulia recorded his third RBI of the series with a single to left.

Things stayed quiet until the ninth, when Mauro Gomez walked against Paul Phillips with two outs and moved to third on a single from Cody Johnson. Orlando Mercado then knocked a base hit to center, scoring Gomez and sending the tying run to third. Phillips was able to strike out Concepcion Rodriguez to end the game, nailing down a 2-1 win.

De La Cruz and Cipriano each had two hits to lead the Biscuits.

Downs (2-0), making a spot start for Jake McGee, struck out five and walked two to pick up the win. Mississippi starter Kyle Coefield falls to 1-1 with the loss.

LHP David Newmann throws for the Biscuits on Tuesday morning at 10:35 AM against the Braves’ Scott Diamond as the Biscuits look for a series-clinching win.
