Matulia Delivers 9th Inning Win
Single past drawn-in infield scores Mayora in 5-4 victory
MONTGOMERY, AL - John Matulia singled past a drawn-in infield to score Daniel Mayora in the bottom of the ninth, and the Biscuits (4-8) beat the Jackson Generals (6-6) 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at Riverwalk.
Mayora began the frame by doubling to left center, leaving him a triple short of the cycle for the day. Henry Wrigley followed with a single, and Nevin Ashley was walked intentionally before Matulia delivered the game-winner.
After an Ashley single scored two and made it 2-0 Biscuits in the second, James McOwen hit his second home run of the series off Biscuits starter Matt Moore in the third to give the Generals a 3-2 lead. Nate Tenbrink connected on a solo-shot against reliever Ryan Reid in the seventh to make it 4-2, but the Biscuits answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning - a homer from Mayora, and a two-out, RBI-double from Cody Cipriano - to set up the ninth inning dramatics.
Reid went 3.2 in relief, his longest outing in four seasons. Matt Bush (2-1) wound up grabbing the win, tossing 1.1 hitless. Moore finished his day having allowed three runs on four hits over four innings in a no-decision. Jackson starter Anthony Vasquez also settled for a no-decision, giving up four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings. Steve Richard (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Wrigley collected two hits in his first game off the DL. Matulia also had two, while Mayora had three.
RHP Chris Archer will throw for the Biscuits on Wednesday night against LHP Andrew Carraway. First pitch on the first Military Wednesday of the season is scheduled for 7:05.
