Biscuits Throw One-Hitter, Lose 1-0

Suns beat Biscuits for a 10th-straight time, take sole possession of 1st

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Biscuits (70-62/34-30) threw a combined one-hitter but lost 1-0 to the Jacksonville Suns (68-66/35-29), which placed the Suns one game ahead of the the Biscuits in the standings Monday night at Riverwalk.

Matt Buschmann (6-8) only allowed one hit through eight innings for the loss. The sinker-baller threw 16 groundball outs while retiring the Suns in order in seven of the eight innings he pitched. Kirby Yates worked a perfect ninth inning to combine with Buschmann for the one-hitter.

The Suns only run, hit and baserunners came in the fourth inning. Buschmann walked Jake Smolinksi to lead off the inning. After Chris Gutierrez struck out, Zack Cox walked to put runners on second and third. A ground out to first put runners on second and third. With two outs, Jake Smolinski pulled a softly-hit groundball through the hole at second to score Smolinski. Mikie Mahtook threw out Cox trying to score from second. The one run was all the Suns needed.

Omar Luna led the ninth inning off with a single. He made it all the way to third with two outs. AJ Ramos (21) got Kyeong Kang to fly out to right-field to end the game and earn his 21st save of the season.

The win for the Suns was their tenth-consecutive victory over the Biscuits.

The series finale will be Tuesday at 7:05. RHP Jake Thompson will take the mound for the Biscuits while the Suns will send LHP Brian Flynn to the hill.
