Yates Slams Door on Furious Rally
6-0 lead vanishes before Yates helps Biscuits hold on to 7-6 win over Mobile
MOBILE, Ala.- After racing out to a 6-0 lead, Kirby Yates (above) had to slam the door on a furious Mobile BayBears (40-31) rally to preserve a 7-6 Biscuits (37-32) win Thursday in the second-half opener at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Entering the eighth trailing 7-1, the BayBears scored five times against Marquis Fleming, who hadn't allowed a run in June prior. Adam Liberatore retired the final two batters of the eighth and the first batter of the ninth before Yates came on to finish the job with a pair of strike outs.
The Biscuits exploded with a four-run first inning, keyed by a two-run double from Greg Sexton. Ryan Garko led off a two-run third with a solo homer, and the Biscuits sat with a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Alex Colome (3-2) went six innings for the first time, holding the BayBears to a run on four singles and three walks in the victory. Gaby Hernandez (0-3) gave up six runs on nine hits over five innings in the defeat.
Hak-Ju Lee led a 14-hit charge with a 3-5 night. 3-through-5 in the order - Garko, Kyeong Kang, Tyler Bortnick, and Mike Sheridan - all recorded two hits.
LHP Kyle Lobstein will take the ball for the Biscuits in game two of the series Friday at 7:05 against RHP Chase Anderson.
