Biscuits Split Doubleheader with M-Braves

Biscuits won 7-3 in game one while dropping the night-cap 3-2

PEARL, Miss.- The Biscuits (28-26) used a three-run first inning to jump start the offense in a 7-3 win over the Mississippi Braves (24-29) in game one of Thursday night's doubleheader, while the M-Braves won the night-cap 3-2 at Trustmark Park.

With the bases loaded, Tyler Bortnick (above) knocked a two-out, two-run single to centerfield to start the scoring in the first inning. Bortnick now leads the team with nine multi-RBI games. Michael Sheridan added an RBI-double to give the Biscuits a 3-0 lead after the first frame. The Biscuits never trailed in the game.

Jake Thompson (3-5) battled through six innings to pick up his third consecutive victory. The 22-year-old righty gave up three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking three. Adam Liberatore pitched a scoreless seventh inning to finish the game.

Hak-Hu Lee, Ty Morrison and Ryan Garko all went 2-4. Omar Luna had a 1-2 night including his first home run of the season and 3 runs scored.

Luis Avilan (1-4) gave up four runs in four innings while surrendering six hits in the loss.

The M-Braves jumped out early on the Biscuits in game two scoring three runs off of Merril Kelly (2-1) in the second inning. Montgomery scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to trail Mississippi 3-2 going into the final inning.

Sean Gilmartin (3-5) completed his third complete game of the year by inducing Luna to ground out with the tying run on third to end the game. Gilmartin gave up two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Kelly picked up his first loss of the season by giving up three runs and four hits in four innings while striking out three.

The series finale between the Biscuits and M-Braves will be Friday night at 7 pm. RHP Alex Colome will start for Montgomery while Mississippi will give LHP David Hale the nod.
